The Colorado Avalanche finished the 2016-17 season with a 22-56-4 record. The Avalanche failed to make the NHL playoffs and were nearly 50 points short of the Wild Card spot. The Avalanche are gearing up for another run at the NHL Playoffs in 2017-18 NHL season.
Founded in 1972 and joined the NHL in 1979, the Avalanche are based in Denver, CO and play in the Central Division of the Western Conference of the NHL. The play against highly competitive teams such as the Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues, and Winnipeg Jets. The Avalanche play their home games at the Pepsi Center in downtown Denver.
The hockey club moved to Denver in 1994 and in that same year won the Stanley Cup Championship. They have won two Stanley Cup Championships over their career, again in the 2000-2001 NHL season. They are the first NHL team to win the Stanley Cup in the season following a relocation.
